Basically, optimization is the process of reducing the file size while retaining as much image quality as possible. In Photoshop, this is done after you have created, or edited an image that you like. Once you have made all your adjustments and edits to the PSD file, you are then ready to optimize the image for the web.
Optimizing is NOT the same as using the SAVE AS function in Photoshop. When you save as a JPG, that simply changes the file type. Although it may reduced the file size, it does not try to get the smallest size while retaining image quality. Therefore, the file can probably be further reduced for faster loading .Optimization is the process of balancing the appearance of an image with the file size. In other words, to make an image look good with the smallest possible file size so that it downloads quickly is not done with the SAVE AS option.
There are different techniques for accomplishing optimization with different programs. I will discuss optimization techniques in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Fireworks in this assignment.
